Elwing has just welcomed a new group of adventurers aboard – a group from South Otago High School – during the next few days they will be completing their Dayskipper Certificate (earning them 6 credits at level 2 for their NCEA) and then they will be adventuring our into Paterson Inlet at Stewart Island to practise their new skills and to enjoy the southern wilderness at Stewart Island. Fingers crossed for some good weather! During the week, weather permitting they will spend time sailing, kayaking, wilderness trekking in the Rakiura National Park and they will visit Ulva Island before their return to Halfmoon Bay on Friday. There is another voyage similar to this scheduled for the first week of the October holidays – 29th September to 4th October – this voyage is open to school students 14+ years old, contact us if you think this voyage would be of interest to you!
The vacancies in this course and voyage are almost taken. This is an excellent way to build up your academic qualifications – The NZ Coastguard Dayskipper Certificate course is worth 6 x level 2 credits in your NCEA qualifications. If you think you are too busy during the term time – think about contacting us and asking us to run the course for you in the holidays! Make use of the winter while the boating season is taking a rest – upskill yourself in your boating safety and be ready next season to be a better and a safer boatie!
Elwing is resting for a few days but we have a Combined Schools Voyage coming up. This is a very exciting voyage for students Year 10 and up – the voyage is an ‘Education/Adventure Voyage’ – Our adventurers will come aboard Elwing to do their Coastguard Boating Education ‘Dayskipper Certificate’ while at the same time adventuring aboard Elwing, experiencing Stewart Island! Imagine living on a large yacht! Travel from bay to bay, exploring rivers, hideaway coves. Experience remote reefs and sandy shores. Paddle kayaks up hidden creeks through the bush. Develop teamwork and leadership skills during all activities, PLUS extend your ‘Safe Boating Knowledge’ by completing the CBES (Coastguard Boating Education Service) Dayskipper Certificate and at the same time adding to your academic qualifications with Unit Standard credits.
As well as true adventure this trip will help to enhance our appreciation of the environment, help us learn how to look after it and enjoy it to its full. Voyagees, with the aid of Arthur, the skipper, will raise and lower sails, sail to a new anchorage each night. At the end of the day they will sit around and fill in their logs to recapture the adventures of the day. This tailor-made programme for senior adventurers will be an amazing, fulfilling and educational experience in this unique part of New Zealand.
The cost of this course per student is $585.00 all inclusive from Bluff. This includes all ‘Coastguard Boating Education Service’ (CBES) exam fees, student manual, ferry, voyage aboard Elwing, food and GST. You organise your own travel to and from Bluff. Participants will meet at the Bluff Real Journeys Ferry Terminal by your own arrangement on
Sunday 19 June 2011 at 4.00 pm sharp where they will be met by Arthur, the skipper of Elwing. They will travel together on board the Real Journeys ferry to Stewart Island where they will board Elwing and begin the academic side of their Stewart Island Adventure. During the week the group will complete the academic side of the course plus they will adventure aboard Elwing while continuing to experience and practice their newfound knowledge and skills from the course. After their exciting adventure at Stewart Island the adventurers will travel again with Arthur aboard the Foveaux Express, back to Bluff, arriving at 4.00 pm on Friday 24 June 2011. They will then travel home, again by their own arrangement.
